WHEN?

When will the next major flood occur? The South Delta knows that it is a matter of "when" not "if." The Project is needed now, before the inevitable flood.

It’s taken a long time, but the Yazoo Backwater Project is now ready for a final decision. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is providing a public comment period on its Final Report and Final Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement.

Final approval of the Project is expected in 2008. The Corps will start acquiring the reforestation and conservation easements upon approval. The Report requires that 15,000 acres of reforestation easements be acquired by the Corps before operation of the pumps.

Construction of the pumping station is expected to take four (4) years, and be ready for operation in 2012.

The project has broad bipartisan support from public officials from the local level to Washington, D.C., and it has the support of the region’s citizens.
